BMW アート・カーのアイデアは、競売人でレーシング・ドライバーのエルヴェ・ポーレンが、1975年にル・マン24時間レースに出場した時に初めて生まれました．
ポーレンは芸術とレースの世界をつなげるものを探していました． 彼は自分の480馬力のBMW 3.0 CSL の外観を変えるよう芸術家に依頼しようと思いつきました．
彼の発想はBMW に歓迎され、友人であるアレキサンダー・カルダーが自動車の芸術作品をデザインすることになったのです．

完成品は熱烈に受け入れられたので、BMW はこの試みを続けることにしました． 次の年にはニューヨークの芸術家フランク・ステラが幾何学模様を描き、1977年にロイ・リキテンシュタインが他の車のデザインをしました．
これら最初のアーティストによる車は、全てル・マン24時間レースに出場し、成功裏に終わりました． そして、1979年のアンディ・ウォーホルへと続きました．
しかし、最初はレースのためのアイデアだったものが、すぐにより範囲の広いものへと変わっていきました． 1986年のロベルト・ラウシェンベルクのアートカーは、量産モデルをベースにしたものです．

1982年にオーストリア生まれのリアリズムの巨匠、エルンスト・フッシュが欧州人として初めてアートカーのアーティストに加わり、BMW 635 CSi に描きました．

作品の国際的多様性や芸術の領域は、1980年の終わりに向けて開花していきました． 1989年に２台のBMW M3 のレーシングバージョンが、オーストラリアで描かれました．
１台はアボリジアニの芸術家であるミカエル・ジャガマラ・ネルソンによって、もう１台は東洋志向のカントリーマンであるケン・ドーンによってデザインされました．

1990年は日本のBMW により始まりました． それは加山 又造によるBMW 535i です．
ヨーロッパでは、スペインの景観デザイナー、建築家で画家でもあるセザール・マンリークが、BMW 730i のデザインに惹かれて描きました． 続いて1991年には、A. R. ペンクがドイツ人で初めてZ1 を基にアートカーをデザインしました．

その年の終わりに南アフリカのエスター・マーラングが、BMW 525i のアートカーを創作するために、伝統的なNdebele の装飾を用いました． 彼女に続き、イタリア人のサンドロ・キアがBMW M3 のラリー仕様プロトタイプモデルをアートカーにしています．

1995年、イギリス人のディヴィッド・ホックニーが14番目のアートカー作者となりました． アメリカ人のジェニー・ホルツァーによるBMW V12 レーシングカーで、BMW のアートカーはその原点であるル・マンに戻りました．
アートカーの作品は５大陸による６カ国の優れた芸術家によって創られ、現代文化を典型的に反映する、独特のものとなったのです．

The idea of the BMW Art Car was born in 1975, when the auctioneer and racing driver Hervé Poulain took up his starting position for the 24-hour Le Mans race for the first time.  Poulain had sought a link between his involvement in the art and the racing worlds.  He hit upon the idea of asking an artist to alter the appearance of his 480 hp BMW 3.0 CSL.  His initiative was readily welcomed by BMW, and his friend Alexander Calder was commissioned to design the mobile artwork.

The result was so enthusiastically received that BMW decided to continue the experiment.  The New York artist Frank Stella covered a BMW with his geometrical patterns in the following year, and in 1977 Roy Lichtenstein designed another car.  The cars of these first artists were all - successfully - put to the test on the 24-hour race at the Le Mans track, and the series continued in 1979 with a car created by Andy Warhol.  But what began as an idea for the racing circuits, soon took on a broader dimension.  Robert Rauschenberg's Art Car was based on a series production model on 1986.

In 1982, the Austrian-born master of fantastical realism, Ernst Fuchs, became the first European to join the Art Car artists when he painted a BMW 635 CSi.

The international diversity and artistic range represented by the collection continued to expand towards the end of the 1980's.  In 1989, two racing versions of the BMW M3 series were painted in Australia.  One of these was designed by the aboriginal artist Michael Jagamara Nelson, the other by his western-oriented country-man, Ken Done.

The 1990s opened with a contribution by BMW in Japan, the work of Matazo Kayama based on the BMW 535i, and in Europe the Spanish landscape designer, architect and painter César Manrique allowed himself to be inspired by the design of the BMW 730i.  In 1991 there followed the first German Art Car - a BMW Z1 designed by A. R. Penck.

Towards the end of that year the South African Esther Mahlangu employed traditional Ndebele ornamentation to create her BMW 525i Art Car.  She wad followed by the Italian Sandro Chia who used the prototype model of a rally racing car of the BMW M3 series.

In 1995, the English artist David Hockney became the fourteenth contributor to the collection.  With the design of the BMW V12 sports racer by the American artist Jenny Holzer, the idea of the BMW Art Car has gone back to its roots - to Le Mans.  The Art Car Collection spans the work of prominent artists from nine countries across all five continents.  Together they form a mirror of contemporary culture, as exemplary as it is unique.
